Coloring isn’t just for kids—it’s a powerful tool for relaxation, creativity, and even mindfulness. Whether you’re looking for a stress-free way to unwind, a fun project to do with your kids, or a unique way to express your artistic side, making your own coloring pages is easier than you think. I want to show you how to make a coloring page!

With the right approach, you can turn simple sketches, digital designs, or even photos into beautiful, engaging pages ready for coloring.

In this guide, we’ll walk through the process step by step so you can start creating your own custom coloring pages today.

First, we’ll show you how to make a coloring book page using ColorBliss. Then we’ll talk through what makes a good coloring page.

How to Make a Coloring Book Page with ColorBliss

Making a coloring book page is easier than you might think when you use ColorBliss!

It really only takes 2 steps.

First, you’ll need to create an account. You can sign up with your email and password at colorbliss.com/signup.

Once you are signed in, you’ll see there are four ways to create a coloring page with ColorBliss:

  1. Using a text prompt
  2. Making word art
  3. Turning a drawing into a coloring page
  4. Turning a photo into a coloring page

For now, let’s keep it simple and create a coloring page from a text prompt. Click “Try it now” under text prompts or the rainbow plus button in the left hand sidebar.

You’ll see a sample prompt has been added for you–you can make your first coloring page using that prompt if you want. Leave it as is, edit it, or erase it and start fresh.

The best prompts include:

  • A subject – what’s the main focus of the coloring page?
  • A pose – how is the subject standing or looking in relation to the viewer?
  • A setting – where is the subject?
  • A composition – try things like close up, from behind, full body, landscape
  • An artistic style – optional, but a lot of fun. Try stained glass, kawaii, or futuristic for some fun styles

Here’s an example prompt:

A dutch angle of a magical wizard, angled slightly, in a ancient egyptian temple complex, celtic knots style

Once you have your prompt written, click “Make my coloring page”. Wait a few seconds, and the coloring page will appear!

Here’s what our prompt created:

That’s pretty intricate – and as you’ll see below in the elements of a good coloring page, we want the right level of detail for our audience.

How to make a coloring page in a specific style

To make a simpler coloring page, with bold lines, we can use a custom style.

Click the rainbow plus button to open the Create a coloring page panel. You’ll see that the last prompt you used is in the prompt box.

Let’s leave it as-is, but scroll down to the settings box. See where it says “Style”? Click that dropdown, and click “Simple”, then click “Make my coloring page”.

Here’s what my prompt from before turned into:

A little abstract – but much simpler! The “Simple” style is great for young kids.

ColorBliss also supports these styles:

  • Zentangle
  • Mandala
  • Intricate
  • Person

Elements of a good coloring page

A good coloring page balances design, detail, and usability to make it fun and engaging to color. Whether you’re creating a simple doodle or a detailed illustration, certain elements make a coloring page more enjoyable and visually appealing.

1. Clean, Bold Outlines

First, clean, bold outlines are essential. Lines should be clear and crisp—not too thin that they disappear when printed, and not too thick that they dominate the design. Avoid sketchy or fuzzy edges; solid black outlines work best for easy coloring.

2. Balanced Detail Level

The level of detail also matters. A page that is too simple can feel boring, while one that is too complex may become frustrating. The best designs include enough detail to be interesting without overwhelming the person coloring. Striking the right balance ensures a satisfying experience.

3. Clear Spaces for Coloring

Each section of the page should have clear spaces for coloring. The areas should be large enough for easy filling but not so oversized that they lack structure. Avoid excessive tiny details unless you’re designing an advanced coloring page meant for experienced colorists.

4. Engaging Composition

A strong composition keeps the page visually engaging. Using interesting shapes, patterns, and a variety of line weights can make the design more dynamic. Open spaces combined with intricate areas create contrast and make the page more enjoyable to complete.

5. Theme or Subject Matter

Having a clear theme or subject matter makes a coloring page more appealing. Whether it’s floral patterns, animals, mandalas, or fantasy scenes, a cohesive design helps draw people in. A well-thought-out theme enhances creativity and keeps the colorist engaged.

6. Room for Creativity

Good coloring pages also leave room for personal creativity. Designs that allow for color blending, shading, or the addition of extra details make the experience more rewarding. People enjoy putting their own artistic spin on a page, so allowing for flexibility makes a design more versatile.

7. Printer-friendly design

Lastly, a coloring page should be printable-friendly. High-resolution images (300 dpi) ensure sharp lines when printed. The design should be in black and white only, without gray shading or pre-filled colors, so it works well with different coloring materials.

A great coloring page invites creativity, provides just the right level of challenge, and feels satisfying to complete. Keeping these elements in mind will help you create designs that people will love to color.
